Appearance

Crickets are thin insects, 1/2 to 1 inch long. Most common in Texas, like the field cricket and house cricket, have dark brown to black bodies, long antennae and powerful hind legs for jumping.

Behavior, Diet & Habits

Crickets are nocturnal and known for their chirping by rubbing their wings together. Omnivorous, they eat plants, fungi and sometimes other insects. Inside Texas homes, crickets will eat fabric, paper and food crumbs, causing minor damage and becoming a nuisance.

Crickets are attracted to well lit areas at night and will enter homes and businesses for shelter, food and warmth. In Texas, especially late summer and fall, cricket populations can explode due to favorable weather and you will see them inside.

How do you get crickets?

Crickets can enter through open doors, windows, cracks and gaps around foundations. Exterior lighting and moisture can also attract crickets to structures and increase the risk of infestation. Infestations are more common after drought or heavy rain, both common in the Texas climate.

How serious are crickets?

Reproduction

Female crickets lay eggs in soil or organic matter. Under favorable conditions crickets can reproduce quickly and produce large populations in a short time especially in warm Texas months.
